Celebrating 80 years of business in Gorey.

The people at Halford's Hair Studio are currently celebrating 80 years of business in Gorey. The popular establishment has been cutting, styling and grooming Gorey heads since Leo Halford moved to the town in 1923 and set up business in Esmonde Street. Halford's Barber Shop soon moved to 42 Main Street. Over the years the business was handed on to Leo's son Noel, and then to the present proprietor Noel's son Sean. Some of his curling tools used to create the famous "Marcel" wave are still on display in the shop. Sean and his brother Billy started work in the business as lather boys in the 1960s. 'My hands would be red and sore at the end of the day, but on a good day, four or five shillings in tips would be very welcome'. Sean left the family business in 1972, but remained on at weekends and holidays. In 1973 he married Kay Sheil, and in 1987 they opened 'A Cut Above Hair Studio' in Gorey. When Sean's parents died in 1992, they relocated their business to 42 Main Street.
